MAIN PURPOSE OF THE ROLE

The role of the internal auditor is to independently and objectively evaluate the organization’s operations and gather relevant supporting evidence. The internal auditor essentially serves as the eyes and ears of the company’s senior leadership and board of directors. The internal auditor will help the organization accomplish its objectives by bringing a systematic, disciplined approach to evaluate and improve the effectiveness of risk management, control, and governance processes.

Their assigned work may cover any area of an organization.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Objectively assess the company’s business and IT processes
  • Assess the company’s risks and the efficacy of its risk management efforts
  • Ensure that the organization is complying with relevant laws, statutes and regulations
  • Evaluate internal control and make recommendations to maintain a highly effective environment
  • Identify and test controls in place
  • Identify risks, shortfalls or gaps in processes and provide recommendations for remediation
  • Promote a culture of ethical behaviour and help identify improper conduct
  • Assure safeguards are in place over company assets
  • Investigate instances of potential unethical activities
  • Communicate the findings and recommendations
  • Performing follow up engagements to ensure recommendations / remediation have been implemented and the risks have been mitigated

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

  • Matric
  • Minimum Higher Diploma in Internal Auditing. (NQF 7) or BCom Degree majoring in Accounting or Internal Auditing
  • A member of a professional body will be advantageous (SAICA/SAIPA)
  • A Certified Internal Auditor or studying towards accreditation will be a distinct advantage
  • Minimum 3 years prior internal / external auditing experience post articles
  • Risk management experience is a distinct advantage
  • Working knowledge of:
    • IFRS and IAS
    • ISA and IPPF
    • Companies Act
    • Income Tax Act
    • King Report
    • Risk Management
    • Governance best practice
    • ICT and its related controls and security
  • Running audit engagements from start to follow up and conclusion
  • Experience with non-financial audits would be a distinct advantage
